If patients are asked for so-called “charitable contributions” for medical services at the National Cancer Institute, they can immediately contact the management of the medical institution. Director of the National Cancer Institute, Olena Yefimenko, stated this in an interview for “UP. Life”. She emphasized that the patient should not make any “charitable contributions”. “We will fight against it (corruption – ed.). I have enough strength to release people and to transfer such information to law enforcement agencies,” Yefimenko said. Informational posters will also be placed in the NIR stating that they do not accept “charitable contributions” from patients. “I also want to assure you that there will be no “charity contributions” at the National Cancer Institute. The charity account will only be for organizations that want to help, but we will not accept contributions from the public,” added Olena Yefimenko. The National Cancer Institute is the last cancer center in Ukraine to sign an agreement with the National Health Service. This means that the NIR will work under the medical guarantee program, which provides free medicines and services for patients. However, many corruption scandals are associated with the NIR, and patients often accuse the staff of extorting money, indifference, and sometimes even refusing to provide services for free.
