The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed on Monday that the new package of sanctions against Russia will include measures against third countries that help the aggressor state in waging war against Ukraine.

According to von der Leyen, the measures prepared by the European Commission are “essentially a warning that we take our sanctions seriously, that we can ban (export – ed.) certain goods to third countries if there is clear evidence that this is a circumvention sanctions and supplies to Russia”.

“We see that there is a discrepancy between what starts in the European Union, transits through Russia, and then ends up in a third country. And that’s why we are discussing as a deterrent the question of whether there should be such a ban on transit,” she explained. she.

The head of the European Commission did not specify exactly how this mechanism will work, and mentioned that it is about “several control points” that will confirm the need for restrictions.

Also, she added, the new package of sanctions may expand the list of EU goods prohibited for transit through Russia.
