The EU is ready to stop Russian gas transit through Ukraine
The EU’s dependence on Russian gas has decreased from 45% in 2021 to 15% in 2023: The bloc of countries is ready to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
This is stated in the message of the European Commission.
“We used to import 150 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia every year, and now this volume is less than 50 billion,” said European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson.
According to the report, the EU reached 90 percent of its winter gas storage target in August, well ahead of the November 1 deadline.
Europeans also cut gas consumption by 18% between 2022 and 2024, exceeding the original target.
According to the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, the EU is also ready for the expiration of the gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia this year.

We will remind:
The Government of Ukraine is not conducting official negotiations regarding the continuation of the transit of Russian gas after the termination of the current agreement.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev expressed confidence in the outcome of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to ensure continued supply of Russian gas through Ukraine to several European countries.
Ukraine does not intend to extend the gas transit agreement with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024, and is ready to discuss the transit of gas from other suppliers through its GTS if requested by Europe.
