The ex-head of the All-Tatar Public Center Agliullin was detained
The former chairman of the All-Tatar Public Center Zinnur Agliullin was detained in Naberezhnye Chelny on Wednesday. In September of this year, a criminal case was initiated against him under the article about “inciting interethnic enmity” between Russians and Tatars, Idel.Realii writes.
Agliullina’s wife told the Telegram channel of the Union of Tatar Youth “Azatlyk” that the police broke into their house in the morning and conducted a search. One of the investigators reported that a criminal case was opened against Zinnur Agliullin “for propagandizing extremism.” She also added that other activists were also searched. Later, “Azatlyk” reported that Agliullin was released from the police department.
According to the Telegram channel “Tatar Yakuza”, last year Zinnur Agliullin joined the movement “Tatar People’s Party Yangarysh”, which was declared extremist by the Supreme Court of Tatarstan in August of this year. Agliullin allegedly headed the Yangarysh branch in Naberezhnye Chelny and attracted new supporters.
- The All-Tatar Public Center is the most famous social and political association of the Tatar national movement. It was founded in 1988. In the early 1990s, the organization demanded full sovereignty for Tatarstan. In the last years of its existence, the WTOC spoke in support of the special status of the republic, as well as in defense of the Tatar language as the state language in the region.
- In January 2021, the prosecutor’s office of Tatarstan demanded that VTOC be recognized as “extremist”. The supervisory agency found signs of extremism in the speeches of Tatar activists at a rally in memory of the victims of the capture of Kazan in the 16th century. On June 10, 2022, VTOC was recognized as an extremist organization and liquidated by the decision of the Supreme Court of Tatarstan.
