The first bank for long-term storage of erythrocytes was created in Ukraine

In the capital, on the basis of the Kyiv city blood center, the only bank for long-term storage of erythrocytes in Ukraine was created. Establishing a bank will ensure the availability of components of rare blood types that may be in short supply when urgently needed or needed in large quantities during emergencies. This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration in Telegram. “The possibility is realized due to the extension of the storage period of erythrocytes to 30 years. Now the maximum storage period is up to 42 days,” says the KMDA. Also, the creation of a bank will make it possible to stockpile erythrocytes of rare phenotypes. It will be recalled that earlier the Ministry of Health told whether there was enough donor blood during the battles for Bakhmut. It was also explained to donors whether it is possible to donate blood after COVID-19 or vaccination. Read also: Is it possible to be a donor after a tattoo and who is prohibited from donating blood?
