Montana Governor Greg Gianforte on Wednesday signed a law banning the Chinese platform TikTok from the company ByteDance. Thus, Montana became the first state in the USA to ban the popular app for short videos. This is reported by Reuters.

The reason for the ban

The state wants to protect residents from alleged data collection by China. Google and Apple will be prohibited from offering TikTok in their stores in the state, but this will not impose any sanctions on those who use the application. The ban will enter into force on January 1, 2024.

Montana said TikTok could face fines for each violation and additional fines of $10,000 per day if it violates the ban. Apple and Google stores can also be fined $10,000 for each violation per day if they violate the ban.

Earlier, TikTok stated that the new law “violates the First Amendment rights of Montanans by illegally banning TikTok,” and stated that it “will continue to work to protect the rights of users in Montana and beyond.”

In recent years, TikTok, which has more than 150 million users in the US, has faced increasing calls from lawmakers and officials to ban the app across the country due to fears of the Chinese government’s potential influence on the platform.

But so far, calls to ban TikTok across the country or to give the Biden administration new powers to combat TikTok or its ban have not advanced in Congress.

Former US President Donald Trump tried to ban new downloads of TikTok and WeChat by means of an order from the Ministry of Commerce. However, in 2020, this demand was blocked by several courts and never came into force.
