The reform of the senior school in Ukraine provides that from 2027, tenth graders will be able to choose between areas of study – academic and professional.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine launched site “Profile”, which contains everything that students, parents and teachers should know about the step-by-step implementation of the reform.

“The reform of the senior school will change approaches to learning in senior classes and will be based on new opportunities in choosing a study profile, comprehensive development and an individual approach to each student.

91% of high school students and 83% of students of professional institutions want such changes, according to the results of the All-Ukrainian sociological survey by KMIS”, – will be noted in the MES.

The website of “Profilna” explains that starting in 2027, after the 9th grade, students will choose where they will continue their studies – in an academic lyceum or institutions of professional (vocational-technical) / vocational pre-higher education.

Studying in academic lyceums will involve:

  • preparation for admission to higher education institutions in grades 10-12;
  • one or more study profiles in one lyceum;
  • in-depth study of specialized subjects and integrated courses;
  • the choice of subjects regardless of the profile (the possibility to combine physics and philology, history and chemistry, etc.).

Every year, the number of hours for optional subjects will increase

IN students of academic lyceums will be able to choose a profile (profiles) of learning within clusters:

  • STEM;
  • linguistic and literary;
  • social and humanitarian to study subjects and courses in depth.

“Students will be able to choose subjects and integrated courses that match their interests and goals. Every year, the number of hours for elective subjects will increase, making it possible to create an individual educational path.” – it is noted on the “Profilna” website.

Research teaching methods, project and practical work, modern laboratories and equipped classrooms will be used here.

In addition to selective ones, there will be compulsory subjects for all: Ukrainian language, mathematics, English, history, etc.

Acquisition professional (vocational and technical) / vocational higher education aimed at:

  • mastering the profession;
  • faster access to the labor market;
  • obtaining a certificate of complete general secondary education;
  • the choice of subjects related to the future profession;
  • the opportunity to enter a higher education institution after graduating from a college or vocational training institution.
For the 2024/2025 academic year, 30 ambassador lyceums have been selected to help prepare for piloting.

From 2025, piloting of the reform will start throughout Ukraine

Piloting of the reform will start in 2025 throughout Ukraine. It provides:

  • approbation of new approaches to learning;
  • development of optional courses;
  • testing educational materials.

For the 2024/2025 academic year, 30 ambassador lyceums have been selected to help prepare for piloting. Teachers of these lyceums will become mentors for pilot educational institutions.

We used to wrotehow the high school will change after the reform. The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, noted that there will be more practice and new equipment in the specialized school.
