The NAPK included an Indian company in the list of sponsors of the war: it supplies the Russian Federation with an important part for weapons

What is known about the company

CK Birla Group and its subsidiary National Engineering Industries (NEI, brand NBC Bearings) are helping the Russian military industry to replace critical European and American military equipment parts, including bearings.

This is a critical detail for many types of equipment: tanks, other armored vehicles, tracked vehicles and aviation. In addition, the bearings are necessary for the functioning of the railway — the main method of Russian military supply and all Russian logistics, the NAPK noted.

The Russian Federation is unable to produce bearings of sufficient quality and in sufficient quantity. Only in 2020, Russia imported $419 million worth of bearings. More than half (55%) came from Europe and North America, and primarily from Germany — 16%.

After the large-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, European and American manufacturers left the Russian market. The main tank building and tank repair enterprises of Russia — “Uralvagonzavod” and “Omsktransmash” — completely stopped due to the lack of these parts. Significant problems arose in the design of airplanes, ships, submarines, and train maintenance.

It was the CK Birla Group that helped make up the shortfall. From April 2022 to March 2023, the share of NBC Bearings in the import of bearings from India to Russia was 38.4% ($12.3 million). The main buyer was the “European Bearing Corporation” group, whose products are actively used in the manufacture of locomotives, aviation, missile systems and other military equipment.

“We call on this company and other manufacturers of dual-purpose goods to refuse to supply products to the terrorist state of the Russian Federation,” said the head of the National People’s Committee of Ukraine, Alexander Novikov.

The second subsidiary of the CK Birla group, the cement producer Ultratech, has already been put on the sanctions list, buying coal from the Russian SUEK for yuan to circumvent dollar sanctions.
