The Nobel laureate called for the creation of an international tribunal for Putin

Ukrainian human rights defender Alexandra Matviychuk, head of the Center for Civil Liberties, which received the Nobel Peace Prize last year, called for the creation of an international tribunal for Russian President Vladimir Putin. She needed to do it as soon as possible: according to Matviychuk, it will have a “chilling effect” on the Russian leadership and prevent further war crimes.

Matviychuk said that many Russian soldiers and their commanders do not realize that sooner or later Putin’s rule will come to an end and they will have to bear responsibility for what they have done. The threat of criminal prosecution, according to the human rights defender, should make them think.

Earlier, many politicians at the level of the UN, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the European Parliament spoke out in favor of conducting an international investigation into Russian aggression in Ukraine. The General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine investigates crimes allegedly committed by Russian troops – it has already opened more than 65 thousand criminal cases. Along with national investigations, a case is opened at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

  • The subject of the accused is the unleashing of an aggressive war in itself, which violates the UN Charter and the principles of international law, as well as specific war crimes: murders of civilians, including mass murders, torture, rape, shelling of residential buildings and civil infrastructure.
  • The parliaments of the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia recognized Russia as a sponsor of terrorism. In the USA, the Senate demanded this from the White House. The resolution on recognizing the regime in Russia as terrorist was adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
