The organization “Doctors Without Borders” has stopped its activities in Russia

The international non-governmental organization “Doctors Without Borders” has stopped its activities in Russia. In her statement, it is said that this is a forced step. In August, Doctors Without Borders received a letter from the Ministry of Justice with a notification that their Russian branch was excluded from the register of branches and representatives of foreign non-governmental organizations, and with a demand to liquidate the Russian office.

As reported, the formal reason was that, in the opinion of the Ministry of Justice, the activities of the branch did not comply with the statute.

The representative of “Doctors Without Borders”, responsible for work in Russia, Norman Sytali said that the organization is closing the Russian branch “with a heavy heart” and will be glad to resume its work when and if it becomes possible.

“Doctors Without Borders” worked in Russia for 32 years. Together with the Ministry of Health of Russia, they implemented their programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Ivanovo, and Kemerovo regions, Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Dagestan. The scope of their attention included the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, especially difficult-to-treat forms, HIV, other infectious diseases, work with risk groups, including migrants.

After the start of the war in Ukraine, Doctors Without Borders provided medical and humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine and Russians moving to safe regions of Russia from border regions.
