On Monday, it was announced in Paris that the reconstruction of the Notre-Dame Cathedral is “progressing quickly enough”, and one can hope for its opening to worshipers and tourists at the end of 2024, less than six years after the fire on April 15, 2019.
The famous spire of the cathedral burned down and collapsed. The construction of the new spire can be observed already this year, said General Jean-Louis Georgelin, the commander of repair and construction works. “The return of the spire to the silhouette of the city will mean that we are winning the battle for Notre Dame,” the army general told the Associated Press.
Actually, the reconstruction began last year, after two years of work on strengthening the structure and creating safe conditions for restorers and builders.
The government decided to restore the architectural masterpiece of the 12th century in the form in which it was known before the fire. The 93-meter spire, which rose above the cathedral in the 19th century according to the project of the architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, will also be recreated.
On Tuesday, March 7, in the underground space opposite the entrance to the cathedral, an exhibition dedicated to reconstruction, scientific and technical developments will be opened, and some fragments of the interior of the cathedral that remained after the fire will be presented.
