The President of Georgia pardoned the participant of the actions against the law on “foreign agents”
On September 20, the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, signed a decree pardoning one of the participants of the actions against the law on “foreign agents”, Georgi Shanidze. This is reported by “Echo of the Caucasus”.
On September 16, a court in Tbilisi sentenced Shanidze to four years in prison for damaging a video surveillance camera at the Georgian parliament building and illegally growing marijuana. The second charge was added during the trial.
In April, Zurabishvili pardoned 22-year-old Georgian activist Lazare Grigoriadis, who was also convicted for participating in protests against the law on “foreign agents”.
The law on “foreign agents” was adopted in Georgia in the summer of 2024. It provides for the creation of a register of organizations – conductors of foreign influence, where all NGOs and media whose annual budgets consist of at least 20% of foreign funding must be registered. The discussion and adoption of the law was accompanied by mass protests in Tbilisi, during which dozens of activists were detained.
