The President of Serbia, Vučić, addressed the nation

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, addressed the people with a message on Monday evening. His speech was devoted to the increased tension on the border of Serbia and the partially recognized Kosovo.

As Vučić stated, responsibility for the conflict lies with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurty, whose main goal is to inflame enmity between the people of Serbia and Kosovo. Vučić also believes that NATO is acting against Serbia with Kurta’s hands.

Vučić criticized the actions of the Kosovo police and, in particular, of the UN peacekeeping forces under the leadership of NATO (KFOR), saying that they contribute to the escalation and use batons and tear gas against the demonstrators. He mentioned at least two wounded among the Serbian protesters. The Serbian edition of Novosti, with reference to the director of the clinic in Kosovska Mitrovica, Zlatan Elek, reports that about 50 people have already applied for medical help.

At the same time, Reuters reports that at least 25 KFOR personnel were injured during clashes with protesters.

Aleksandr Vučić reported that he appealed to the representatives of the “Big Five” – the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy – with a request to hold a meeting on Tuesday due to the worsening of the situation in Kosovo. He intends to ask these countries to “understand their children.”

  • The situation in the north of Kosovo worsened at the end of last week. The mayors of cities elected in the elections on April 23 had to take their positions. The Serbian population of Kosovo boycotted the elections, protesting against the appointment of politicians approved by Pristina in the northern regions, where Serbs make up the majority of the population.
  • On May 26, Kosovo Serbs tried to block their way to the mayor’s office. Police quelled riots in Leposavich, Zvechan and Zubyn-Potok communities. Serbia has announced that it will bring its armed forces to the border with Kosovo in a state of full combat readiness. NATO special forces (KFOR) also operate in the region under the auspices of the UN.
