The Pushkin Museum was renamed in Kyiv

In Kyiv, two branches of the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv will be renamed – “Kyiv Pushkin Museum” and “Museum and Exhibition Center of Contemporary Art”. Both renamings take place at the request of the metropolitan community and the head of the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv. This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Kyiv City Military Administration. The “Kyiv Pushkin Museum” will henceforth be called the “Estate on Kudryavka”, and the “Museum and Exhibition Center of Contemporary Art” will simply be the “Museum and Exhibition Center,” the message said. The decision was made by the authorities of Kyiv and put into effect by order of the head of the KMVA Serhiy Popko. Manor on Kudryavka The former Pushkin museum was created in 1990, but the place was found after 1999, when it merged with the Kyiv History Museum. It mostly consists of the collection of a Kyivan named Yakiv Berdychevsky, who collected materials related to the poet’s life and work. In 1987, Berdychevsky left for Germany – and left his entire collection as a gift to the city, on the condition that a separate museum be created in Kyiv. For the 200th anniversary of Pushkin, the authorities allocated a small building on Kudryavska Street, built in 1816 and completed in the 1850s, for the museum. There is no information that Pushkin stayed at this estate, it is known that he visited a house at 14 Hrushevskyi Street, as well as a hotel at Pechersk, which has not been preserved. The collection includes mostly exhibits from the first half of the 19th century. Among them are books with signatures of contemporaries and poet friends, political works of that time. Manuscripts and editions published during Pushkin’s lifetime were also exhibited. For example, these are separate chapters of “Eugene Onegin”, which were called “notebooks”. The entire novel came out already censored – it was also on display. What exactly the Museum of Kyiv will exhibit in the Manor on Kudryavka – there is no information yet. Museum-exhibition center In the museum-exhibition center “Museum of the History of Kyiv” – before the beginning of the full-scale war, there was a permanent exhibition devoted directly to the history of Kyiv. Exhibits from the times of Kyivan Rus to the beginning of the 20th century were presented. The last large-scale exhibition before the invasion was the exhibition “Red Noise” – a “picture” of the influence of propaganda of the Soviet Union through art was created from the exhibits of the Museum. In 2022, the Museum opened the project “Archeology of everyday life”, where they showed exact copies of household items and luxuries that Kyiv was known for during the time of Kyivan Rus. The center also hosts exhibitions of contemporary artists, educational events and excursions. Read also: Kiyanin Malevich and friends: the Ukrainian avant-garde, which was appropriated by Russia
