The Russian delegation will not be invited to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz
The Russian delegation will not be invited to the ceremony marking the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. This was announced by the director of the memorial complex “Auschwitz – Birkenau”, created on the site of one of the most sinister Nazi concentration camps.
The director of the memorial complex, Piotr Tsyvinsky, said: “This is the anniversary of liberation. We remember the victims, but we also pay tribute to freedom. It is difficult to imagine the presence of Russia, which obviously does not understand the price of freedom.”
Despite the fact that Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops, Russia stopped being invited to commemorative events after the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This is the decision of the museum management. In February 2022, the museum issued a statement condemning the actions of the Russian leadership, calling the invasion barbaric.
In 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia called the position of the memorial complex “an attempt to rewrite history and erase historical truth.”
The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz will be celebrated on January 27, 2025.
