In the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporizhzhia region, the occupation authorities plan to cancel the mandatory study of the Ukrainian language from the new academic year. This was reported by the so-called “minister” of education and science of the Zaporizhzhia region Olena Shapurova, the Russian publications TASS and “Kommersant” write. The occupiers claim that in September 2023, parents will be able to choose which language – Russian or Ukrainian – their children will learn as their native language. “This school year, the Ukrainian language is compulsory for everyone, children learn it for three hours a week. From September 1, 2022, according to the program, it was the native language, but after the (pseudo-referendum – ed.) referendum, according to the laws of the Russian Federation , each person can choose which language he will learn as his mother tongue,” said Shapurova.
