Documentary “Peaceful People” directors Maryna Karpovych became a finalist of the LUX Audience Award 2025, founded by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy.

The five finalists were announced by the first vice-president of the European Parliament, Sabina Verheijen, and the head of the Committee on Culture and Education, Nela Reel, reports the official website of the European Parliament.
“Peaceful People” – documentary film directed by Oksana Karpovych. For it, the author used an unusual material – radio interception of telephone conversations between the Russian occupiers and their families. They sound against the background of images of the destruction brought to Ukraine by the occupier, and impress with their everyday attitude towards cruelty towards Ukrainians.
The world premiere of the film Karpovych took place at the Berlin Film Festival. And in Ukraine, she opened the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.
In addition to the Ukrainian film “Peaceful People”, the shortlist included films: “Animal” directed by Sofia Exarchu, winner of the Berlin Film Festival 2024 “Dahomey” directed by Mati Diop, Flow directed by Gints Zilbadolis and “Julia is silent” directed by Leonardo van Dale.
“European cinema reflects the challenges and hopes of our society. This year’s finalists, each in their own special way, demonstrate the rich diversity of the world of cinema. They offer powerful perspectives on topical issues such as women’s rights, climate change, our history, and the war in Ukraine. They start important conversations and invite us to look at the world through different lensesSabina Verhaijen noted.
The winner of the LUX Audience Award 2025 is determined by online voting. You can cast your vote for the film using the link until April 2025.
The winner will be announced in April 2025 at a ceremony in the European Parliament in Brussels.
About the LUX Audience Award
Audience Award LUX Audience Award awarded by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy in partnership with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas cinema chain since 2020.
Its mission is to promote dialogue and interaction between European politicians and the public through film art. The nominated films appeal to European values and raise awareness of social and political issues of today, such as mental health, poverty, climate change, freedom of expression, gender equality, LGBTIQ+ rights.
Five nominated films are selected by a group of film professionals from all over the EU. During the competition period, the European Parliament organizes free screenings of finalist films in 27 EU member states.
