The winners of the Artdocfest documentary film festival have been announced

The main prize of the main Artdocfest Open competition was awarded to the painting “Manifesto”, assembled from videos that Russian teenagers posted on social networks, from humorous school notes to terrible scenes of terrorist attacks and deaths. Children run away from a killer with a rifle, from an air raid siren that warns of a nuclear attack, but they cannot escape violence, persecuted for political statements and harassment from teachers. The film’s director works in Russia under the pseudonym Angie Vincito. This is the second case in the history of Artdocfest when an anonymous author receives the award: in 2021, the film “The Silent Voice” with the story of a Chechen gay man (the pseudonym of director Reka Valerik) was awarded.

Special prizes of the jury were awarded to paintings dedicated to the fate of children and teenagers, two stories taking place in Eastern Ukraine. This is the Danish director Simon Vilmont’s film “House of Fragments” about an orphanage in the border zone, and the picture by Ukrainian Alyssa Kovalenko “We will not extinguish” about a group of teenagers from a Donbas village. Both films were shot before Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine and present a collective portrait of the “children of the catastrophe.” Vilmont’s film was nominated for an Oscar. Kovalenko’s film was shown at the Berlinale and has already been invited to many world festivals, the author continues to work in the war zone as a volunteer and director.

The main prize of the jury of the second Baltic Focus competition was awarded to the Danish-Polish tape “Apollonia, Apollonia”. For several years, director Lea Globe filmed the contemporary artist Apollonia. Provocative portraits of the heroine remind Frida Kahlo.
