“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Valery Mykhailovych Bassel, Honored Artist of Ukraine, actor, director, teacher, unique creative personality, guru of our theater, passed away today.“, they said in the theater.
The actor died at the age of 86. Colleagues and students also said goodbye to him.
“Valery Bassel went to other worlds. A legendary figure of theatrical Odessa, he created a wonderful separate world – the Jewish Theater of Bassel. I saw several performances there when I was quite a teenager, at the beginning of my theater journey in Odessa. I will forever remember that intonation, that tenderness, that fantasy that came to life in a small space, and then it seemed that everything was possible“, the actress wrote Maria Khomutova.
Valery Bassel was born in Moscow and graduated from the Novosibirsk Theater School in 1960. After that, he worked in the theaters of Novosibirsk, Almaty and Kaliningrad, and in 1972 he moved to Odesa and started working there.
For almost 20 years, he played on the stage of the Odesa Russian Drama Theater named after Andriy Ivanov (now the Odesa Regional Drama Theater).

Since 1992, he started working as a director of local TV channels, and continued to work in Odesa theaters. He was a participant in the humorous “Gentleman Show”.
Since 1995, Bassel has held the position of artistic director and production director of the theater group “Fusile Fuss” of the Society of Jewish Culture of Odessa.
The actor is known for his roles in films and series: “The meeting place cannot be changed”, “The magic voice of Gelsomino”, “Trust that burst”, “Roads of fire”, “The green van”, “Fan”, “Unidentified person”, ” Gambrinus”. “Diamond Hunters”, “Life and Adventures of Mishka Yaponchik”, “Shuler”, “Son for Father”, “Wolf Sun”, “Anka from Moldavanka”, “Captain” and others.
Since 1972, the actor settled in Odessa and worked in local theaters.

Farewell to Valery Bassel will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday September 10near the Odessa Academic Puppet Theater (15 Pastera Street).
