They tried to ship the ancient icon “The Mother of God of Tikhvinsk” of the famous Borisov icon-painting industry from Ukraine to the USA. The sender from the Ukrainian city of Pokrov declared the late 19th-early 20th century shrine as “accessories” worth 1,400 UAH. Kyiv customs officials have detected an attempt at illegal forwarding in an international postal shipment bound for the United States, the customs’ Facebook page reports. Experts from the National Art Museum of Ukraine determined that the icon discovered by customs officers has cultural and historical value. Items that constitute the national, historical or cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people are prohibited from being sent in international mail. Customs officials drew up a report on violation of customs rules, and the icon was removed.
