The World Congress of Ukrainians called on the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to cancel the Oscar nominations of the film “Top Gun: Maverick” directed by Joseph Kosynski. Earlier, the mass media found out that it was probably financed by the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev. This is stated in an open letter of the SCU to the President of the American Film Academy Janet Young and members of the Board of Governors. In it, the film academy is asked to reject films with any direct or indirect investment by Russian oligarchs or other participants in Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine. Organizers are also being asked to review the eligibility of Tom Cruise-starrer Top Gun: Maverick for the 2023 Oscars. in the “Best Film” nominations, was financed by the sanctioned Russian Rybolovlev. He could do it as a partner of the investment company New Republic Partners. A frame from the movie “Top Gun: Maverick” “Rybolovlev is one of the richest Russian oligarchs and a close friend and business partner of Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation…For decades, Rybolovlev was the largest business partner of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko…Rybolovlev came under criminal investigation in Monaco, France and Switzerland for alleged corruption as soon as he started buying assets outside of Russia,” the SCU emphasized. It also states that Rybolovlev’s involvement in financing the tape was not advertised, so the participation of the Russian oligarch could have caused censorship by the Kremlin. In addition, the World Congress of Ukrainians offers the organizers of the Oscars to make a statement condemning the war in Ukraine at this year’s ceremony. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 12. The presenter of the Oscar ceremony 2023 will be the popular American presenter and comedian Jimmy Kimmel. Previously, he was the presenter of the ceremony twice – in 2017 and 2018. The Ukrainian-Danish-Swedish-Finnish documentary “A House Made of Splinters”, which tells the story of a children’s shelter in Lysychansk, made it to the list of nominees this year. It will compete for an award in the Best Documentary category. Read also: The organizers of the Oscars rejected Zelensky’s application for a speech for the second time
