Ukraine wants to start production of nuclear fuel in three years – Energoatom

Ukraine plans to establish the production of nuclear fuel, it may take three years to create a line for its production.

According to Galushchenko, nuclear fuel will first be produced for domestic nuclear power units, and later it can be exported to other countries.
Currently, 17 VVER-440 units are operating in Europe, which do not yet have an alternative to Russian fuel. Ukraine has already started production of components of VVER-1000 fuel units, and later, according to the Ministry of Energy, it will start production of fuel for VVER-440 units as part of the Energoatom project with the American company Westinghouse.
“Unfortunately, many European countries remain dependent on Russian nuclear technologies. At the same time, Ukraine, abandoning Russian nuclear fuel, switched its nuclear power units to nuclear fuel from the American manufacturer Westinghouse. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, and Bulgaria also expressed their desire to make such a transition. And in in the future, Ukraine can become a supplier of nuclear fuel for these countries,” Galushchenko said.
According to him, the production line in Ukraine will produce heat-separating assemblies for nuclear reactors of nuclear power plants.
In 2023, it is planned to complete the licensing and enter the industrial production of shanks, and in 2024 – the industrial production of heads for fuel cartridges. These components will be used to produce nuclear fuel for Energoatom at the Westinghouse plant in Sweden.
The president of Energoatom, Petro Kotin, added that Energoatom plans to complete the plan to create its own nuclear fuel production line in three years.
