During the new research season, Ukrainian polar explorers started using drones to study whales. This was reported at the National Antarctic Scientific Center. According to scientists, the length of humpback whales reaches 13-15 m, and blue whales – 30 m. Because of this, it is difficult to measure them from a boat or from the shore. However, the task is greatly facilitated by drone images. Photo: National Antarctic Science Center “For more accurate calculations, our drone is equipped with an additional laser altimeter, which determines the distance to the target more accurately than the on-board one,” explained Oksana Savenko, a whale researcher and an employee of the Department of Biology and Ecology of the National Center for Scientific Research. By determining the size of the whale, scientists can draw conclusions about its age category and fatness.
