Ukrainians supported the petition to introduce mandatory sex education into the Ukrainian education system. The appeal on the president’s website has gained more than 25,000 signatures – now Volodymyr Zelenskyy has to consider it. The petition was initiated by the online resource “Gender in Details” and the public alliance “Political Action of Women”. “In the conditions of a huge number of information sources and the unlimited possibilities of the Internet, children alone gain access to videos that are often distorted and promote violence. Due to the lack of information analysis skills, children take everything at face value and do not understand what responsibility they have for their actions and inactions can carry,” the text of the petition reads. Photo: Shaiith79/Depositphotos The authors of the appeal believe that students should know about the physiological and psychological changes associated with puberty, about methods of contraception, unplanned pregnancy, personal safety, as well as know the law and understand the basic principles of the culture of consent. “Sexual education of children and young people significantly reduces the risks of violence, the level of crime, the number of teenage pregnancies, and also increases the age of first sexual intercourse. We call for the introduction of a mandatory sex education course, based on the culture of consent, in primary education, secondary school, as well as in higher and vocational and technical educational institutions,” the petition adds. The Ministry of Education and Culture assured that there is already sex education in schools.
