Diarrhea – these are watery or liquid stools that occur at least three times a day.

Diarrhea can be caused by a new product in the diet, an excessive amount eaten fruits or much more serious problems, such as an infectious disease or poisoning.

If you notice symptoms of diarrhea, it is important to rehydrate and avoid certain foods that may worsen symptoms.

The list of (not) recommended products was published by the publication Healthline, Very Well Health, WebMD and Health.com.

What should not be eaten with diarrhea

In the first day or two, doctors do not advise using:

  • fried, fatty or spicy food;
  • dairy products, including milk-based protein drinks (except yogurt);
  • legumes;
  • nuts and seeds;
  • dried fruits;
  • raw vegetables and fruits (corn, pineapples, cherries, figs, currants, grapes – in any form), berries with stones;
  • citrus fruits and juices;
  • onion and garlic;
  • candy;
  • potato chips;
  • sourdough;
  • nut butters;
  • fatty meat;
  • fatty fish (in particular herrings, sardines);
  • carbonated drinks (even sparkling water)
  • coffee, strong tea;
  • alcohol;
  • artificial sweeteners, in particular sorbitol.

It is important to understand that such a diet cannot be followed for a long time, as it is not balanced. If diarrhea does not go away for a long time, be sure to seek help from a doctor.

What can you eat with diarrhea

One of the most famous diets for diarrhea is BRAT, which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.

But you can add other products to the diet, including soft-boiled eggs, natural yogurt without sugar, low-fat broths, slow-cooking cookies, etc.

Here is a list of foods that can be used for diarrhea:

  • lingering cookies;
  • low-fat transparent broth;
  • applesauce, baked apples;
  • white meat without skin;
  • bananas;
  • white rice;
  • uncooked eggs;
  • coconut water;
  • simple pasta without sauces;
  • baked or boiled white potatoes;
  • unsweetened oatmeal on water;
  • canned pears;
  • low-fat yogurt without sugar;
  • white bread;
  • unsweetened crackers/biscuits/pretzels;
  • weak tea

It is very important to drink a lot, as diarrhea leads to fluid loss. You can use plain water without gas, rehydration solutions, tea without caffeine, sports drinks without sugar and broths, writes WebMD.

It is important to remember that diarrhea threatens dehydration and can be one of the symptoms of serious diseases.

Be sure to consult a doctor if you have:

  • black or bloody stools;
  • severe abdominal pain;
  • temperature from 39°C (38°C in children);
  • confusion, difficulty breathing;
  • signs of dehydration (dry mouth, crying without tears, dry skin, convulsions, etc.);
  • vomiting that does not stop;
  • the condition does not improve within 24 hours or more.

You should also contact your doctor if you have eaten a potentially dangerous/exotic food (eg dried fish, mushrooms, canned food).

It will be recalled that scientists previously found out which diet can prolong the life of women, and named the type of nutrition that best reduces the risks of type II diabetes. We also explained how to eat with insulin resistance.
