What is the state of water in Kyiv and will the pollution from Desna reach the people of Kyiv: the response of the KMDA

Kyiv city authorities stated that there are two scenarios regarding the potential pollution of the Dnieper due to pollution of the Desna tributary.

According to the optimistic scenario, pollution from the Desna will not reach the Dnipro. And according to a more pessimistic view – if the pollution does happen – Kyiv has reserves of purified water.

The chairman of the board and general director of Kyivvodokanal told about it Oleg Lysyuk on briefing August 11.

“A pessimistic scenario is possible, but very, very unlikely… Now we see that dilution is taking place. Perhaps this stain will not reach Kyiv in the volume that would cause concern.” – said Lysyuk.

The expert explained that Kyiv’s water supply system is extensive and relies on many sources of drinking water.

The KMDA also emphasized that the water situation in the city is fully under control and currently “does not cause any concern.”

“Since August 14, we began to receive information about a man-made accident related to the release of chemicals into the Seym River. From this moment on, an operational headquarters works 24/7 at the city level, which constantly monitors and collects all information from laboratories regarding the quality of water in the Desna and Dnipro rivers, especially on the territory of our city.

At the moment, the results of the analyzes do not cause concern”said the director of the Department of Municipal Security of the KMDA Roman Tkachuk.

The representative of KMDA assured that if any risks arise, the local authorities will inform Kyiv in advance, at least a day in advance.

Kyivvodokanal explained that the pollution of the Desna is organic in nature, and the movement and size of the stains are constantly monitored. Twice a day, specialists receive analyzes at the Desnya stations.

“Indeed, it is most likely from a sugar factory, waste from this production. It is really of plant origin and it is organic. Moreover, we cooperate with specialized laboratories and institutes that study water quality.

There are no pesticides, no excess, no toxins, no other substances in the water. Therefore, it is ordinary organic matter. It’s just that its quantity is so great that it absorbs oxygen in the water.”Oleg Lysyuk said.

At the same time, Kyivvodokanal emphasizes that drinking water in Kyiv is safe.

“Today, we have really good quality water in the water intake area, there are no worries. But we are watching the situation with the Seim River. Specialists of the water utility went out and collected samples for research on how to deal with it, what kind of pollution it is, what regulations to use technologically.” – said Lysyuk.

Oleg Lysyuk also said that experts have thought out how to deal with the pollution of the Desna by analyzing the water from the Seimas.

“With our technologies, the reagents that we are fully equipped with, we can cope. Apart from possible odors, which can only be eliminated by activated carbon. We have done a lot of work to implement this technology.

Since inwe had not used it before, we had to develop a dosing unit. It has already been completed and tested. Now we expect coal. We have found a manufacturer in Europe and thank UNICEF for their cooperation, which is helping us to deliver this reagent.” – said the head of Kyivvodokanal.

We will remind you that it used to be Ukrainian mass mediawith reference to the State Agency for the Development of Land Reclamation, Fisheries and Food Programs, reported that on August 14, the Russian military began large-scale water pollution in the Seim River (the left tributary of the Desna).

The State Inspectorate conducted an inspection of the water in the Desna River within the Kyiv region and found no significant deviations. But later, the water in Desna near Chernihiv darkened, and in some places massive fish deaths were recorded.

The capital authorities assured that the water supplied to the homes of Kyiv residents is safe. On August 28, ex-Minister of Environmental Protection Ruslan Strelets stated that there is no threat to the population’s drinking water supply, as drinking water intakes from the Seim and Desna rivers in Chernihiv and Sumy regions are not carried out.

Kyiv city government emphasizedthat specialized services constantly monitor the state of drinking water on the territory of Kyiv and water in the waters of the Desna and Dnipro rivers.
