At a meeting on Monday, September 9, the Ukrainian Oscar Committee chose the film that will represent Ukraine at the 97th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences “Oscar” award.

From Ukraine, Philip Sotnichenko’s film will be submitted as a candidate for the nomination in the “Best International Feature Film” category “La Palisade”.
In addition to “La Palisade”, three more films were included in the national selection: “House “Slovo”. An endless novel” Taras Tomenko, “We were recruits” Lubomyr Levytskyi and “Peaceful People” Oksana Karpovich.
The film that will represent Ukraine at the Oscars 2025 was chosen by a vote of 14 members of the Oscar Committee.
“Committee members reviewed the submitted films in detail, the discussion was passionate and constructive. As a result of the vote, the film “La Palisade” was chosen as a contender. We wish the representative success in the Oscar race!– said the head of the Ukrainian Oscar Committee, the director Dmytro Suholytkyi-Sobchuk.
What is the film “La Palisade” about
“La Palisade” – the full-length debut of Philip Sotnichenko. The creators call the genre of the film post-Soviet noir. The events take place in Ukraine in 1996, a few months before the signing of Protocol No. 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which provided for the abolition of the death penalty.
The tape tells about a forensic psychiatrist who has to take part in the investigation of the murder of a policeman. The law enforcement officers are in a hurry to close the case before the death penalty is abolished, but the doctor is not sure of the defendant’s jurisdiction. And when he sees how judicial experiments are conducted on the suspect, he begins to doubt the transparency of the law enforcement system.
Filming took place in Transcarpathia and Kyiv. For them, a special technology was used, which involves a combination of film retro image and modern digital technologies.
The main roles in the film were played by Andrii Zhurba, Novruz Hikmet, Oleksandr Parkhomenko, Valeria Oleinikova, Olena Mamchur, Oleksandr Marleev.
The world premiere of the film took place at the Rotterdam Film Festival. There, the tape was presented in the main competition and received the FIPRESCI award.
