WHO will close its office in Moscow

The World Health Organization is closing the European Office for Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in Moscow. The functions of the Moscow office will be transferred to Copenhagen, Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko announced. The absolute majority of member states voted for the corresponding decision today during a special session of the European Regional Committee of the World Health Organization. The Ukrainian Ministry of Health initiated this process back in May of last year – then the WHO promised to “study the possibilities of moving the office from Moscow.” “I want to thank the partners for their political and financial support. Special thanks to the governments of the countries that have confirmed their financial contributions, thanks to which the full funding of the office in Copenhagen for the next two years has been achieved. This decision is based on the firm position of each of the countries, which was preceded by passionate discussions. This is a decision that demonstrates a unified vision of the European region,” Minister Viktor Lyashko wrote. It will sound until this unjustified aggression stops, and the guilty receive a just punishment,” Lyashko added. The minister also thanked Hans Kluge, director of the WHO European Regional Office, for his support.
