Public inspectors of the Ukrainian language support program in Ivano-Frankivsk will not punish the use of Russian on the streets and in the city’s institutions. Their main task will be the popularization of state and public control over compliance with language legislation.

About it on the air of the show “Great Lviv Speaks” on the NTA TV channel told Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk Ruslan Martsinkiv.

The head of the city explained that the introduction of language inspections is a public initiative. Therefore, citizens who express a desire to join it will not have special powers, but will act within the limits of current legislation.

Like ordinary Ukrainians, they will follow the requirements of the law regarding the use of Ukrainian in public spaces and during the provision of services. They will be able to contact the police in case of violations or aggressive reactions.

According to the head of the city, the inspectors will also popularize language courses and “tolerantly make remarks” to persons who speak Russian.

“They will say: ‘We ask you to use the state language, if it is difficult for you to speak Ukrainian, you can take courses to make it easier for you to communicate in it.’

Inspectors will be given appropriate training, which is currently being developed”– added Ruslan Marcinkiv.

According to the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, after the publication of information about the initiative, about 50 people who wish to become language inspectors have already applied to the city administration.

We will remind you that the idea of creating a language inspectorate in Ivano-Frankivsk, according to Ruslan Marcinkiv, arose after a meeting with the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremen.

Then the mayor of the city shared his observations – in Frankivsk, according to him, recently you can hear the Russian language more often. Therefore, the initiative was created in order to popularize the Ukrainian language.
