Zelensky announced the support of allies on the issue of fighter jets

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, said that at the summit in Moldova, his country’s allies demonstrated strong support for the issue of providing fighter jets to Kiev to repel Russian aggression.

Zelensky made such a comment at a press conference after a meeting of more than 40 European leaders in Chisinau on Thursday, but did not provide all the details, Reuters notes. The Ukrainian authorities have been trying to supply Western combat aircraft to Ukraine for a long time.

The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said that the current summit demonstrates the firm determination of the continent to return peace to Europe. Sandu called the decision to hold such a high-level meeting in Moldova, only twenty kilometers from the border with Ukraine, symbolic.

Sandu also said that Moldova is grateful to Ukraine, which resists the Russian invasion and thus protects its neighbors. “Today, Ukraine ensures the security of Moldova, and we are very grateful for it,” said Maya Sandu, who held talks with Volodymyr Zelensky.

After the conversation with Sandu, the Ukrainian leader told journalists that security guarantees are very important now not only for Ukraine, but also for neighboring Moldova – because of Russia and its aggression in Ukraine, as well as potential aggression in other parts of Europe, Zelenskyi’s words are quoted by the Moldovan Service Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Speaking at the summit, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that 2023 is the year for decisions and called for a “clear invitation to Ukraine for membership” at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, as well as security guarantees on the way to the country’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance. At the same time, Zelensky noted that he would like to see progress on the way to his country’s accession to the European Union. Kyiv submitted a corresponding application last year after the beginning of the Russian large-scale invasion.

  • A number of mass media previously wrote that NATO allies are discussing the possibility of providing some security guarantees to Ukraine, based on the example of US cooperation with Israel. Representatives of the NATO countries say that the doors of the alliance are open for Kyiv, but Ukraine’s entry into it is unlikely while the war with Russia continues.
  • On June 1, the summit of the European Political Community was held in the capital of Moldova. This is a new interstate organization created at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron after the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. All European countries, except Russia and Belarus, as well as Turkey and the countries of the South Caucasus take part in its work. The organization’s second summit in history is taking place in Moldova.
