The EU will allocate 56 million euros to its farmers due to the influx of Ukrainian grain

The European Union is activating an anti-crisis fund for farmers in three countries who are facing an influx of Ukrainian crops, which is driving down local prices.

It is reported Bloomberg.

The European Commission will allocate 56 million euros to Romania, Bulgaria and Poland, said Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski. Last year, Ukraine’s three main Black Sea ports reopened for grain exports, but maritime trade remains slower than usual due to Russian sabotage, forcing farmers to continue transporting crops through neighboring EU countries.

“This is support for countries whose farmers have suffered from increased imports from Ukraine,” he said. “We are seeing an increase in supply, a huge increase in imports for border countries.”

The decision was made for Bulgaria and Poland because the combination of their own production and imports from Ukraine exceeded the five-year average before the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Romania was added to the list because it is a hub country for the so-called “solidarity bands”, the European commissioner said.

Romania will receive 10 million euros, Bulgaria – about 17 million euros, and Poland – 30 million euros. This amount can be doubled due to co-financing from the budgets of EU member states.

More Ukrainian harvest also arrived in Hungary and Slovakia. But they will not receive support from the fund, as their combined production and import volumes do not exceed the five-year average, Wojciechowski said.
