Macron and Scholz called for new elections in Kosovo

[ad_1]

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a meeting of European heads of state in Chisinau called on the Kosovo government to urgently hold new municipal elections. The previous elections were boycotted by ethnic Serbs living in the partially recognized republic. Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurty said that he is not against this proposal.

The proposal concerns re-elections in the northern part of Kosovo, where ethnic Serbs make up the majority of the population. After the April municipal elections, mass protests took place there. Local residents are trying to block the passage to municipal buildings of recently elected officials. According to the Associated Press, several cars were set on fire during the riots. The police used tear gas.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, in a statement broadcast on the state TV channel RTS, noted that he had brought the army “to a state of heightened readiness” and ordered the urgent transfer of Serbian troops to the border with Kosovo.

According to Politico, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Kurty, said that he was ready to organize new municipal elections. He also call Belgrade will make every effort to prevent the escalation of the conflict and ensure the safety of future elections. Serbia is responsible for the riots in Kurta.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, for his part, addressed the nation on May 29 and placed the responsibility for the riots on Kurti personally and on NATO, which, according to Vucic, is manipulating the Kosovo government.
