The EU will decide on the extension of restrictions on imports from Ukraine by the end of the day – the European Commission

The European Union has not yet taken a final decision on extending restrictions on the import of certain agricultural products from Ukraine.

The representative of the European Commission, Miriam Garcia Ferrer, announced this at a briefing on Monday, the correspondent of “European Pravda” reports.

The EU official stressed that, as of now, there is no decision on extending the ban on the import of agricultural goods from Ukraine.

“Discussions are still ongoing and we will let you know when a decision is made – which will probably be by the end of the day,” she added.

Ferrer noted that the European Commission is in constant contact with Ukraine and the five EU members affected by the ban in order to determine the conditions for further transit of Ukrainian goods.

“After all, what we are trying to do in the end is to help Ukraine, which faced a very difficult situation after the invasion of Russia,” emphasized the representative of the European Commission.

Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture of Poland, Robert Telus, said that he had received from the European Commission a draft resolution on extension of the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain until September 15. According to “European Truth”, the regulation prepared by the European Commission, which extends the ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural exports, will apply to a smaller number of products.

On May 2, the EU imposed restrictions on the import of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower until June 5 in order to reduce the oversupply of cereals in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. These countries complained that cheaper Ukrainian grain makes domestic production unprofitable.

The European Commission said it could continue restrictions on the import of grain after June 5, if exceptional conditions continue.
