The Israeli parliament passed a bill to limit the powers of the Supreme Court

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, voted on July 24 to adopt the first bill from the judicial reform package, which caused mass protests. The meeting was broadcast by The Jerusalim Post newspaper.
Opposition deputies in the Knesset boycotted the last vote, but the votes of 64 deputies of the ruling coalition turned out to be enough for the adoption of the law. It limits the right of the Supreme Court to overturn decisions made by the government (it is formed from deputies). According to critics, the amendments create opportunities for abuse of power, eliminating one of the few effective mechanisms of control over the government.
Other amendments, which were not voted on on Monday, suggest a change in the procedure for appointing judges of the Supreme Court. The opposition is convinced that the judicial reform laws will lead to the disappearance of the independent judicial system.
During the meeting, a protest demonstration was held near the building where the voting took place, with 20,000 people participating in it, Haaretz newspaper reports. The police used water cannons to drive away the participants, sooobchaetsya about 19 detainees.
Big business joined the protests. The Israeli Business Forum, which unites the heads of 150 of the country’s largest companies, has announced a strike against the reform. Many startups, banks, shopping centers and gas stations joined the strike.
On Monday, Israel’s Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrych suggested postponing the vote on the amendments for at least six months. The initiative was rejected. Ultra-conservative members of the ruling coalition are still insisting on the adoption of laws in their unchanged form, promising otherwise to withdraw from its composition, which will inevitably lead to the sixth parliamentary election in 4 years.
