Moscow will not extend the nuclear weapons agreement with Tokyo

[ad_1]

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia notified Japan of its intention not to extend the agreement on the elimination of nuclear weapons. This is the agreement of October 13, 1993. Its validity expires on May 21, 2024.

The Russian Foreign Ministry explained the termination of cooperation with the “openly anti-Russian policy” of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Tokyo joined the sanctions against Moscow imposed by the United States and other countries of the Group of Seven.

Since the beginning of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, various pro-Kremlin politicians and public figures, and sometimes representatives of the authorities, have announced the possibility of using nuclear weapons. Western countries accuse Russia of using reckless nuclear rhetoric.

At the end of October, Russia conducted a training exercise for a massive nuclear strike. The Ministry of Defense reported that the training took place under the personal supervision of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In early November, the Russian president signed a law revoking Moscow’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. The document was adopted in 1996. Ego, among other countries, was ratified by Russia, but not by the USA and China.

In modern Russia, nuclear tests related to the explosion of a real nuclear charge have not been conducted.
