Russia lost its seat on the governing council of the International Maritime Organization. At the assembly on Friday, she did not get enough votes. Earlier, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, demanded the exclusion of Moscow from the Council.
“Russia has no place in the International Maritime Organization and its leadership, since no one has caused as much damage to freedom of navigation as Russia in recent decades,” Zelensky said in his address on Monday.
The Russian delegation objected, saying that the country plays a “balancing and constructive role” in the organization.
- The International Maritime Organization (IMO) was founded by the United Nations and is engaged in the regulation of maritime trade around the world. It includes 175 states. The next IMO Assembly will be held from November 27 to December 6 this year in London. On Friday, during the voting, 40 member countries of the IMO were elected, which will be part of the new governing council.
- On November 29, Russia also failed to gain enough votes to retain its seat on the executive board of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Last year, the country did not join the governing council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the UN Human Rights Council.
