The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lithuania created a commission to investigate the granting of Lithuanian citizenship to the children of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in 2011-2013.
The fact that Abramovich’s children – Arkady and Anna – have Lithuanian passports became known from a recent investigation by the international consortium OCCRP and its Lithuanian partner Siena. Earlier, The Guardian newspaper revealed that in February 2022, shortly before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich transferred assets and other property to his seven children. Soon he came under the sanctions of Great Britain, the European Union and Australia.
Lithuania is now planning to introduce amendments to the Law on Citizenship, expanding the grounds for revocation of a passport. The changes will affect all Lithuanians with dual citizenship. A passport can be canceled if a citizen “threatens the security interests of the country or publicly expresses support for a state that threatens the security interests of Lithuania, EU members and their allies.”
Also, the Lithuanian Department of Migration has been instructed to study the sanctions lists of the European Union and check whether the relatives of other sanctioned persons are not citizens of Lithuania.
