The leader of the “Citizens of the USSR” was convicted in Sochi under the criminal article of discrediting the army

On December 15, the Adler district court of Sochi sentenced one of the leaders of the “Citizens of the USSR” movement in the Krasnodar region, Maryn Melikhov, to one and a half years in prison for anti-war publications on the Internet. She was tried on a criminal charge of repeatedly discrediting the army.

Melikhova was blamed for the publication of a video with the title “Shock! According to the SVO in Ukraine, there is not a single official published document of the Russian Federation” and a clip with the caption “Slavs do not want war!”. She was detained in June, and since then she has been held in the Armavir pre-trial detention center, Kavkaz.Realii reports. Her lawyer informed the editors that the sentence will be appealed.

The participants of the “Citizens of the USSR” movement believe that the Soviet Union has not legally dissolved and continues to exist, which means that all decisions of the authorities of the independent states that were once part of it are considered illegal. The Russian authorities persecute such activists, calling them extremists and a threat to the constitutional order.

In 2019, a criminal case was opened against Melikhova for insulting a representative of the authorities. In 2021, she was sent to a colony-settlement under the article on appeals to extremism. After her arrest on charges of discrediting the army, Melikhova released several statements from the pre-trial detention center in which she criticized the Russian authorities and the invasion of Ukraine.
