Russian music labels engaged in rap battles are massively deleting their recordings from their YouTube channels. It started after the Investigative Committee opened criminal cases against two young rappers, accusing them of inciting ethnic discord.
Users report that such sites as Russian Battle League (RBL), Versus, Slovo SPb, Slovo Ekb, BRP and others have removed the recordings of battles – both recent ones and those held years ago – from YouTube and other hosting sites. Channel owners do not provide an explanation for this. Fans of rap suspect that the owners of the platforms are afraid of unwanted attention from law enforcement agencies.
On December 17, the Investigative Committee opened criminal cases of inciting ethnic discord against rappers Sherafgan Sharypov (creative pseudonym Sheraph’gun) and Islam Zakirov (Relapse). Speaking at the battle, Sheraph’gun hinted at an incident in the city of Elektrostal, when unknown people scalped a local resident whose hairstyle was considered provocative. Relapse on the battle read the lines about what [бьёт] to a Russian pregnant woman – “this is a preventive strike.” Relapse was delayed. After his arrest, he declared on video that he “insulted the Russian nation and apologizes to the Russian people.”
Both rappers were searched. The “Tot Samy Punch” channel dedicated to rap music claims that some concertgoers were also searched. Both rappers deleted their accounts in social networks. The BRP BATTLE site, where they performed, announced the suspension of activities for an indefinite period. On its VKontakte page, BRP wrote that Recidiv “set up both the platform and the entire genre.”
- Rap battle (or English battle – “battle”) is a verbal duel in which two rappers “attack” each other in verses, often improvising. Battles are characterized by harsh language and statements bordering on direct insults. The jury awards victory to one of the participants based on the poetic quality and wit of the performance.
