Navalny’s lawyer was accused of participating in an extremist community

The lawyer of the opposition politician Alexei Navalny, Olga Mykhaylova, reported that in Russia she was accused in absentia of the so-called participation in an extremist community.
“It turns out that I did not defend Alexei Navalny in all criminal and administrative cases, did not win the appeal in the European Court, but participated in the extremist community created by him in 2011,” Mykhaylova wrote on Facebook.
Last October, three of Navalny’s lawyers — Vadym Kobzev, Alexey Liptser, and Igor Sergunin — were arrested on the same charge.
According to the investigation, defenders of the oppositionist visited the prisoner in the colony and handed over letters from him to his associates. Investigators claim that this is how Navalny continued to lead the extremist community.
Structures created by Navalny, including the Anti-Corruption Fund, are recognized as extremist in Russia.
At the time of the arrest of Kobzev, Liptser and Sergunin, Mykhaylova was abroad and decided not to return to Russia.
The lawyer confirmed that she is abroad with her daughter. “I still hope to be more useful in freedom, and not in the colony, where we spent the whole summer anyway, participating in the absurd closed-to-the-public spectacle of Navalny’s extremism trial,” Mykhaylova noted.
In addition, Mykhailova noted that on the day of her departure abroad, even before the arrest of three of Navalny’s lawyers, operatives and employees of the state TV channel RT followed her at the airport. According to the lawyer, she purchased a one-week tour to Jordan a month before departure and planned to return.
