A resident of Nizhny Novgorod was sent to a pre-trial detention center in the case of participation in Navalny’s headquarters

Mikhail Sharygin, a former member of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Yabloko party, was sent to a pre-trial detention center for two months on charges of participating in an extremist organization.

According to the investigation, Sharygin allegedly reposted messages from Navalny’s headquarters and offered his compatriots to join or support him. Investigators believe that the activist intended to destabilize the situation before the presidential elections in Russia. He did it, as it is said, “on the instructions of the leadership of anti-Russian centers from abroad.”

According to the Telegram channel “Sota”, Sharygin had nothing to do with Navalny’s structures, but in 2020 he ran for the City Duma from Yabloka.

Sharygin was detained on February 13. It was reported that during the searches, symbols of the Anti-Corruption Foundation and Navalny’s headquarters were confiscated from him.

In 2020, Sharygin was fined 400,000 rubles under the article on incitement to terrorism due to a comment with the suggestion to “blow up the fence” around an illegal construction site, which prevented the ambulance from getting to the patient. Then the activist said that, according to the FSB, he “chronically suffers from criticism of the authorities.”

  • Founded by opposition politician Alexei Navalny, the Anti-Corruption Fund was declared an extremist organization in Russia in June 2021. Dozens of cases of criminal prosecution for cooperation with opposition structures are known. The Russian authorities regard the transfer of even a small amount of FBK as financing extremism.
  • After the FBK and Navalny’s headquarters were recognized as extremist organizations, hundreds of the oppositionist’s supporters left the country. Alexey Navalny himself is serving a 19-year term in a colony on charges of extremist activity. The oppositionist considers himself innocent, and the sentence is politically motivated. Human rights organizations recognized him as a political prisoner.
