A captured Marine of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was sentenced to 20 years in Russia in the case of torture

The court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Ukrainian serviceman Dmytro Yevhan to 20 years in a penal colony. As “Mediazon” reports, the court found the marine guilty under four articles of the Russian Criminal Code — cruel treatment of prisoners of war, attempted murder, training in terrorist activities and violent seizure of power.

Dmitry Evgan served in the 36th Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In the battles for Mariupol, he lost his arm and was captured during the surrender of Azovstal.

According to the investigation, during his service in the Marines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in April 2022, Yevhan, among his fellow soldiers, mocked Viktor Lupatsy, a captured ensign of the so-called People’s Militia of the self-proclaimed DPR, and wounded him with at least nine knives. After that, Yevhan was captured by the Russian military, and a criminal case was initiated against him. Lupatsy did not file a lawsuit against Evgan.

In court, Yevhan did not deny that he wounded Lupatis with a bayonet knife and apologized to the surviving Lupatis. The defendant denied the charge of teaching terrorism. According to Yevhan, he was trained at training grounds. “I had to defend my country, but I am not a terrorist,” he said.

The prosecution requested 24 years of prison for Yevhan. Lawyer Maria Eismont asked the court to take into account the fact that the victim Lupacy has no claims against Evgan, as well as the defendant’s remorse. “Evhan would not have attempted to kill a person in a peaceful life, but would have raised his daughter at home,” Eismont said.

At the end of last year, a court in the occupied Donetsk region sentenced seven Ukrainian marines in the case of the torture of Lupatsy. They received terms from 16 to 22 years in the colony.

Yevhan’s case, which caused a stir, including after the demonstration of a match with Lupatsy on central TV channels, was separated into a separate case and transferred to Moscow.

According to eyewitnesses, surrendered Ukrainian soldiers are often tortured in order to obtain incriminating statements.
