The EU plans to tighten the rules for importing products from Ukraine

[ad_1]

Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU member states agreed to tighten customs requirements for some food products from Ukraine. The decision concerns, in particular, poultry meat, eggs, sugar, oats, groats, corn, sugar and honey, the EU leadership announced this week.

Goods subject to the rules may be imported into the European Union duty-free only in certain quantities. Once this amount is reached, customs duties will be payable again. We are talking about the volume of imports to the average indicator for the period from the middle of 2021 to the end of 2023.

The agreement still needs to be approved officially. The rules will be applied from June 6 for one hour. The extent to which the tariffs will affect the Ukrainian economy depends on whether the country under attack from Russia will be able to find new buyers for its products, the DPA agency notes.

The EU exempted Ukrainian goods from customs duties shortly after the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of the neighboring country. The measure agreed by Brussels was intended to support the economy of Ukraine. Current benefits for Kyiv expire in the summer. If a new resolution is not approved by that time, the term of the measure will expire without extension.

Support in the form of tariff concessions caused dissatisfaction on the part of many farmers, primarily in the countries of Eastern Europe. They declare that they are exposed to disproportionate competition from inexpensive agricultural imports from Ukraine.

Ukraine is considered an important world producer of wheat. Residents of the poorer countries of the planet especially depend on the import of its grain. Due to the Russian invasion, there were problems with the export of products by sea, which is important for trade. Meanwhile, wheat prices have risen significantly, writes DPA.
