27 Nobel laureates signed an open letter calling for the immediate release of political prisoners in Belarus, including 2022 Nobel laureate Ales Beliatskyi. The text was published on the website of Belarusian political scientist Dmitry Bolkunts.

The open letter talks about thousands of Belarusians who were tortured under Lukashenko’s regime, 50 thousand repressed in recent years, hundreds of thousands forced to leave the country. “Over the past decades, there has not been a humanitarian catastrophe associated with political repression in Europe on such a per capita scale as in Belarus,” the text says.

The Nobel laureates call on the governments of all EU countries to take immediate measures to stop the repression in Belarus and put pressure on Minsk. As one of the proposed measures, the Nobel laureates mention the closure of the railway from Belarus to Poland, including for goods from Russia and China.

As of March 21, there are 1,411 people in Belarus recognized as political prisoners by the human rights community. However, the real number of people subjected to political repression, including imprisonment, is much higher, notes the Belarusian Service of Radio Liberty.
