5% of Putin’s supporters approve of Navalny’s activities

5% of Putin’s supporters approve of Navalny’s activities

The activities of opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who is now in a colony in the Vladimir region, are approved by 9% of respondents, disapproved by 57%, and have not heard anything about him by 23%. Such data is provided by Levada Center.

In almost an hour, both the number of those approving Navalny’s work and the number of those disapproving decreased: from 14% to 60%, respectively. At the same time, the share of those who do not know about Navalny increased by nine percentage points.

Young people (14%), readers of social networks and Telegram channels (17%) and those who disapprove of the work of Russian President Vladimir Putin (30%) most often support Navalny. Among those who support Putin, 5% also support Navalny. Among those who disapprove of Putin’s policies, 35% also disapprove of Navalny’s activities.

Navalny has been in the colony for two years: in February 2021, the court replaced his conditional term in the so-called “Yves Rocher” case with a real one. Already in the colony, the politician was tried on the case of defamation of the veteran (sentenced to a fine) and on the charges of fraud and insulting the judge (sentenced to nine years in the colony).

59% of Levada Center respondents consider the decision to imprison Navalny to be fair, 21% consider it unfair. At the same time, 22% (among young people – 38%) agreed that the government settles accounts with the opposition in this way.

  • After being poisoned with “Novichok” poison in August 2020, Alexei Navalny was undergoing treatment in Berlin. In early 2021, the politician returned to Russia, where he was detained right at the airport.
  • The politician is serving his term in the Vladimir region. In mid-June 2022, Navalny was transferred from the general-regime colony in Pokrovo to the strict-regime colony in Melekhov. Navalny and his supporters call their criminal prosecution political.
  • Over the past six months, the oppositionist has spent more than a hundred days in the SHIZO, which led to a sharp deterioration in his health. Among the reasons for which Navalny was sent to the SHIZO were an unbuttoned button and refusal to clean the fence.
