The Polish Prosecutor’s Office confiscated money from the accounts of the Russian Embassy

[ad_1]

The Polish prosecutor’s office seized money from the accounts of the Russian embassy and trade representative. This was announced by the Russian ambassador to Poland, Sergey Andreev. According to him, we are talking about large sums both in Polish zlotys and in US dollars.

Andreev reported that the funds from the accounts of the embassy and the trade representative office at the bank Santander were transferred to the accounts of the Polish prosecutor’s office. Notification of this was delivered to the Russian diplomatic mission. Following this, the Santander bank announced that it had terminated cooperation with the embassy and closed the accounts, the ambassador added. He regarded the incident as a gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The accounts of the Russian embassy in Poland were blocked in March 2022, shortly after the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. The reason for the blocking was the suspicion of the Polish authorities that money from the accounts of the Russian embassy could be used to finance terrorism or launder illegally obtained funds. In response, the Russian side also froze the accounts of the Polish embassy in Moscow.

In addition, Poland seized several real estate objects from the Russian diplomatic mission, including a building where diplomats lived and a recreation center near Warsaw.

On May 12, the Polish publication Rzeczpospolita reported that about 5 million zlotys, or $1.1 million, were blocked on the accounts of the Russian Embassy in Poland.

  • Poland is one of the most active opponents of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. It provides significant military assistance to Ukraine both within NATO and independently. The country has accepted several million refugees from Ukraine – more than any other country. Protest actions against the war are regularly held in Poland. In May of last year, unknown people poured red paint over the Russian ambassador Andreev as a sign of protest.
