The USA and South Korea have agreed to counter the nuclear threat of North Korea

A meeting between the presidents of the United States, Joe Biden, and South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, took place in Washington on Wednesday. It was devoted to the prospects of cooperation between the two states, and first of all, to the confrontation of a possible nuclear threat emanating from North Korea.

The parties have expressed concern that in recent months, North Korea has intensified testing of new weapons, including nuclear weapons. As a result of the meeting, the United States and South Korea presented a joint action plan.

The USA promised South Korea support. American submarines, including nuclear missile carriers, will be moored in the docks of South Korea – for the first time in the last 40 years, but America does not plan to place its nuclear warheads on the peninsula.

The countries will conduct joint military training and share strategic information. In the event of a nuclear attack by the DPRK on South Korea, Washington will respond “with an immediate and decisive response with the full force of the alliance, including the nuclear weapons of the United States,” Yoon Suk Yeol said.

“At the same time, we continue to strive for diplomatic methods of resolving tensions with North Korea,” Joe Biden emphasized. Nevertheless, he noted that a possible US nuclear attack on the DPRK would lead to the destruction of the ruling regime in Pyongyang.

In addition, the countries agreed to expand economic and trade partnership. It will primarily concern technologies – production of electric cars, microchips and batteries.

• Seoul does not have its own nuclear program. South Korea and the United States became allies 70 years ago, after the end of the Korean War. About 28,500 American servicemen are currently stationed in South Korea.
