More than 1,500 climate activists were detained in The Hague at a protest organized by the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion. On Saturday, they blocked the highway to protest against the Dutch government’s subsidies for fossil fuel extraction.
According to the police of the Netherlands, they had to use water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. Protesters expected this: many came in bathing suits or with umbrellas.
The Extinction Rebellion movement said that about seven thousand people participated in the action. According to the police, 1,579 people were detained. Criminal cases of vandalism have been opened against 40 of them, they will appear before the court.
Among the protesters were notable media personalities – for example, actress Karis van Houten, known for her role as Melisandre in the TV series “Game of Thrones”.
The radical environmental movement Extinction Rebellion is known for its high-profile actions to protect the climate. In January of this year, the movement announced a change in tactics: if earlier activists beat windows and glued themselves to the asphalt in public places, now they intend to gather large groups of people to protest against the inaction of governments in the face of global warming.
