More than 200 people who fought in Ukraine or their children were admitted to top universities without exams

At least 833 entrants were admitted to prestigious universities in Russia on the basis of the fact that they or their parents fought in Ukraine. This was found out by “Important stories”.

Such applicants entered “according to a separate quota”, introduced by presidential amendments to the law on education in June 2023. The amendments give the participants of the invasion of Ukraine and their children priority in admission, and the children of those killed and wounded in the war can enter any university without exams.

In total, in 2023, at least 203 applicants were admitted to prestigious universities in Russia “according to a separate quota” without exams. Most of all – at the Institute of Physics, St. Petersburg State University and Moscow State University. Another 429 scored points below the pass mark and still passed the budget.

Dmytro, one of those who entered the MIPT “on a separate quota” without exams (his father was injured during the invasion of Ukraine), said that he studied poorly at school and was unable to solve the tasks at the interview at the MIPT.

In 2023, about seven thousand entrants were enrolled in all Russian universities “according to a separate quota”, the Ministry of Education reported.

  • Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. According to the UN, by the end of July 2023, 9,369 civilians were killed and 16,646 were injured as a result of hostilities. These data may be incomplete.
