A sailor of the Northern Fleet was sentenced to 16 years on charges of treason

The Second Western District Military Court sentenced Yegor Tyukin, a Russian Navy serviceman, to 16 years in a strict-regime prison on charges of treason. The press service of the court informed “Interfax” about this, without giving details of the case.

Citing a source in the security forces, “Interfax” writes that Tyukin was accused of passing information representing state secrets to a foreign state. It is claimed that he pleaded guilty. The process, as usually happens with cases of treason, was held behind closed doors. It became known about the criminal prosecution of the serviceman in August, when the case materials were submitted to the court for consideration.

TASS, citing a source in law enforcement agencies, reported that the defendant served in the Northern Fleet. The edition “Ostrozhno, novosti” wrote about the same. At the same time, he supposedly graduated from a university earlier – as “Mediazona” writes, his full namesake studied at a school in Arkhangelsk and later entered the Northern Federal University named after Lomonosov, majoring in “Pharmacy” and “Medical Biochemistry”.

After the start of the war in Ukraine, the number of cases of treason filed in Russia increased sharply. According to the estimates of human rights activists, up to 20 such cases can be initiated in a month; before the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, this number was five times less. Most of the cases, although not all, are related to accusations of aid to Ukraine. There are no acquittals in such cases in Russian courts.
